Okay, it’s over. Here’s my response.

Overall, this was not the best State of the Union that's ever been delivered. There was no history-making line, no "I will go to Korea." No "Ask not what your country can do for you." That said, the last ten minutes of the speech, an appeal to America's better angels, are what I've wanted to hear a President say in an address to the nation since I became aware of politics.

There was little of substance that really pulled me. I liked the idea of moving bank bailout money to small business loans. I liked the idea of ending don't ask, don't tell. I liked the suggestion that compromise is possible.

But I'm not convinced that he (or anyone for that matter) has the ability to bring compromise to capitol hill. I think that it will take a major shift in parliamentary procedure to force the majority and the minority to behave in anything like a conciliatory manner.

Now I'm going to wach the Republican response and try to avoid snarky twittering. Maybe more reaction later.

The house of delegates in Virginia has been clapping for their Governor for about five minutes. Time to shut it.

Obama needs this speech to be a game changed. I believe that it can be.

“Democracy in a nation of three hundred million people can be noisy, and messy, and complicated.”

Now that we’re talking about hope, the end of cynicism, he’s back where he lives. Nailing it.

Ending don’t ask don’t tell. Knew he’d do it. Glad he did.

Michelle Obama is by far the hottest first lady since Jackie O.

My apolitical wife says she likes seeing POTUS dressing down both parties in Congress. I like it too.
